So I am talking to a big name in the coaching ranks and they are telling me they do not care if their students work with other coaches. They see no conflict if they coach players on the pro circuit who might compete against their players. I do and here is why.
Everything I teach is for a reason. I start with basic drop and hit and go from there. Each step builds on the other.
Along comes another coach. They are not understanding what I do. I will never forget a kid I coached back in the day who was very good and I thought could win the nationals. This kid was talked into going to the XYZ camp two weeks before nationals. My kid just could not execute anything but a pinch shot. For some reason Pinch Shot Patty led the camp and just killed my player’s chances of winning. In fairness to my athlete the next year my player came back without attending the XYZ thing and won the nationals. In my mind it could have been two years. Why?
The footwork rehearsal and mechanics rehearsal are just not understood by other coaches. They teach the way they played and may be very knowledgeable but not about what I am teaching. Why? Well my way is not one way for everyone but tailored to each athlete individually. I am not afraid to lose a match or two or more at the beginning so later my athlete can dominate pain free. That’s right, relatively pain free because of the way they hit the ball.
There are a few out there who I would feel comfortable sending people to. I hope they come back to our sport some day!
